In 1995 the Fish & Wildlife Compensation Program (FWCP) was established to offset impacts resulting from construction of BC Hydro dams in the Canadian portion of the Columbia Basin. Since then, the FWCP has invested more than $50 million in hundreds of fish and wildlife projects.
Projects are delivered both by FWCP staff and a wide range of partners including First Nations, industrial partners, local communities, and environmental groups. Almost one-third of FWCP-funded projects are focused on species-at-risk. A significant portion of FWCP funding goes towards the Fertilization Program in the upper Arrow Lakes Reservoir and Kootenay Lake, one of the largest successful lake restoration programs in the world. Other projects funded by FWCP include habitat restoration, land acquisition for conservation purposes, and ongoing species monitoring and inventory work.
