Heron Nest Sighting Form
Columbia Basin Bald Eagle Nest This elegant bird is provincially blue-listed (special concern), and in recent years, high rates of nest failure and colony abandonment have been documented at local heron breeding colonies.

From 2002 to 2006 there has been a 25% decline in the number of heron breeding sites in the Columbia Basin. Now there are about five large heron colonies, each with more than 20 active nests, that account for close to 80% of all known breeding herons in the region.

In addition to the decline in breeding sites there have been relatively high nest failure rates. For example, in 2006, 62% of all active visible nests in the East Kootenay failed to produce young, mainly due to Bald Eagle harassment and predation. As a result, some Great Blue Herons may be starting to nest solitarily, to better protect their young. Therefore the public can play an important role in identifying heron colonies and individual heron nests.

Report your Great Blue Heron nest sightings online by using the form below or contact wildlife biologist Marlene Machmer at 354-0150 or mmachmer@netidea.com.
